SIREN
PROLOGUE
Debasis Sahu looked around the hot and stuffy prison cell, lit by a small bulb that hung from above. The only other source of light was the faint glow of the sun through the small window at the top; sealed with strong but rusted iron bars. Years of dust and cobwebs on the glass pane prevented brightness from permeating inside.
He sat on the ground, with his back pressed flat against the dark and dirty stone wall. A couple of yellowish-grey lizards crawled on it. He did not react to their close presence. The unendurable acrid smell emanating from the nearby public lavatory had little effect on his olfactory cells. He was oblivious to his surroundings. Not long ago, such insensate conditions would have made him cringe with fear and throw up in disgust; but today he was immune to everything around him.
A newspaper lay beside him. He was tempted to read the contents but controlled himself. There was no hurry. He had all the time in the world.
Finally, after many hours of visual confrontation, he picked it up and stared at the front page. It carried his picture albeit a very old one. He read the leading statement very slowly. ‘Highly talented and world renowned multi-millionaire painter Debasis Sahu sentenced to death by the Supreme Court.’ A smile spread across his lips, which morphed into a raucous laughter.
The news did not bother him. It made little difference to him whether he was hanged or kept in the god-forsaken cell all his life.
He abruptly stopped laughing and threw the paper with the flick of his hand. He spat on the floor and wiped the dripping saliva with his wrist. He gritted his teeth, anger flashing in his eyes. Debasis was not satisfied with the way he brought his wife’s despicable life to an end. He wished he had made it a little more painful. But the world thought otherwise; shocked at the barbaric killing.
It was obvious from the confession he made in the court, that Sheetal Sanghavi Sahu, died a slow and a terrifying death.
