GUDIYAA ( DOLL )

Part 3

Couple of months passed. Gudiyaa now looked forward to her daily routine. She studied with Debojeet regularly.

“Gudiyaa, I have misplaced my school calendar. Can you please find it for me?” Debojeet asked her one day, after completing his homework.

Gudiyaa did not waste anytime. She ran towards his room and came back with the calendar. Debojeet had put it under his pillow.

“Gudiyaa you are so sweet. I don’t know how I would have managed without you.”

As a token of appreciation Debojeet opened his cupboard, and offered her a brand new Barbie doll.

“Here take this. I bought this for my cousin, but you can have it.”

Gudiyaa looked at the doll as if she had seen a ghost. Her eyes carried an expression of fear. Debojeet was surprised at her reaction. He looked at Barbie doll and then at Gudiyaa. He was unable to find anything wrong with it.

“Gudiyaa, what happened? You look scared,” Debojeet asked her.

Gudiyaa turned around and dashed out of the room without accepting the gift.

That night, Gudiyaa shivered and yelled in her sleep. The old illness had suddenly revived. Kunda was at her wits end. Her only hope was Mrs. Chatterjee. She decided to tell her.

Next day Kunda discussed Gudiyaa’s unusual illness. Mrs. Chatterjee immediately called Dr. Shrivastava, a renowned psychiatrist.

“I recommend a complete diagnosis,” Dr. Shrivastava suggested.

“Can I bring her today,” Mrs. Chatterjee asked.

“Yes, of course.”

Mrs. Chatterjee immediately rushed to the clinic.

“Doctor, what is wrong with her?” she asked, once the examination was over.

"I think she has been abused. I need more time to find the reason for her unusual behavior," Dr. Shrivastava replied.

“Is it serious?”

“I won’t be able to answer till I do some more tests.”

There was nothing more they could do. The three of them walked out of the clinic towards the waiting car.

“What did the doctor say?” Kunda asked, with tears in her eyes.

“He needs to check her again.”

“The Singh’s were horrible people. They are the cause for Gudiyaa's illness,” Kunda said, unable to control her emotions.

“Singh? What are you talking about?”

“Gudiyaa worked for Mrs. Singh. Those people did something to her. She changed after working with them for a couple of weeks.”

She then narrated the whole incident to Mrs. Chatterjee.

###

Days passed. One night when the Chatterjee's were having their dinner, Debojeet suddenly smiled.

“What happened? You are smiling,” Mrs. Chatterjee asked her son.

“Girls are funny. They are so unpredictable.”

“Who is unpredictable?”

“Gudiyaa. I wanted to gift her Barbie Doll a couple of days back. She refused to take it. In fact she ran away the moment she saw the doll in my hand.”

“Strange. When did this happen?”

“On my open house day,” replied Debojeet.

That was the night when Gudiyaa fell ill. Is there a connection between the toy and her illness, she thought.

She decided to tell Dr. Shrivastava about it.

During their next visit, Mrs. Chatterjee told him about the toy incident.

“Yes. It might have something to do with her fear. Every bit of information is crucial.”

Armed with the new data, Dr. Shrivastava hypnotized Gudiyaa. He asked her several questions. This time she opened up and told him everything. The diagnosis was complete; he now knew the cause.

“How are you feeling,” Dr. Shrivastava asked her when Gudiyaa opened her eyes.

“A little weak. Did I sleep a little while ago?” Gudiyaa asked.

“Yes. But don’t worry. You are fine. Just lie down for a while.”

Dr. Shrivastava looked perturbed. He sauntered towards his cabin. Mrs. Chatterjee and Kunda stood up as he entered.

“Sit, sit …. “

“Dr. Shrivastava, did you find the answer?” Mrs. Chatterjee asked.

Dr. Shrivastava looked at her and then at Kunda.

“Kunda was right. Gudiyaa has been abused.”

“Oh God,” Kunda broke into tears.

"Well," he said. "Gudiyaa was severely punished for playing with a Barbie doll, and wasting her time while working for Mrs. Singh. The couple then seized the Barbie Doll from her hand and called her a thief. She was paraded naked in the house. The couple even burnt her with cigarette. She was kept in a dark room for three days, without food. The trauma of abuse left her scarred mentally."

“That was a long time ago. She had become normal. What was the reason for the trigger?”

"Well, you already know the answer,” Dr. Srivastava said. A smile appeared on his face but his eyes said a different story. He looked unhappy.

“Debojeet?”

"Yes. The toy triggered her illness once again. But don't worry. Love and counseling will cure her."

Mrs. Chatterjee nodded her head.

Ten years later :

Today, Gudiyaa is a teacher in her village where she spreads love, distributes toys and educates young villagers.
