Elevators - Symbol of romance, friendship & chats

posted by lalit navani edited on Apr.27.2011 11:33:31 am
A 300 word Flash Fiction

Flash Fiction example

Kunal thanked Otis & Siemens every time he stepped into the elevator. Not because it made his journey to the office suite less stressful or because of its steel and glass elegance. Kunal loved elevators for a different reason. For him elevators symbolized love, friendship, quick chats, expensive fragrances and genuine smiles.

As he stood inside the cabin, along with many acquaintances, friends and new faces, he remembered his first encounter with Charu, his wife. Even she was riding with him that day. Suddenly, the power tripped. Charu began screaming. Later, he came to know she had that thing for the elevators. Elevator Phobia?

Kunal moved close to her. Charu instantly embraced him out of fear. It was at this point of time Kunal wrapped his arms around her, giving her all the comfort. They stood in the darkness for several minutes. Unknowingly, Kunal had fallen in love with Charu. He wished the power never came back but for her sake he prayed just the opposite.

Kunal was mildly irritated when the elevator suddenly began to move. Why did God listen to prayers that asked something for others, he thought. In spite of the humming of the elevator motor and the illuminated cabin interiors, Charu did not unlock herself from his embrace. It was only when the cabin doors opened that she realized her mistake.

No, that was not a mistake? Was it? Kunal thought.

Well, to cut the long story short, he and Charu became close friends after that incident. Later, they married and she quit her job to look after the family.

Even today Kunal looked at the elevator as a source of new introductions, a place to make new friends, convey things in shortest possible time and conclude million-dollar business deals.

A technological marvel. Hail the elevator!

Rushita, a psychiatrist, lay on the couch with an expression of trepidation. When will the parents understand? There is more to education than marks, she thought.
